Air Filters 101

Air filters are an often overlooked but important part of any home or commercial property. They help to remove dust, pollen, and other airborne particles from the air, making it easier to breathe. In this blog, we’ll break down what an air filter is and why it’s important to keep them as clean as possible.

What Does an Air Filter Do?

An air filter is a device that removes impurities from the air. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be used for both residential and commercial purposes. The most common type of air filter is the disposable pleated filter, which can be found in both furnace and air conditioner systems.

These filters work by trapping particulates in their pleats as air passes through them. The particulates are then removed when the filter is replaced. Air filters are an important part of keeping indoor air clean and can help to improve both respiratory health and overall comfort levels.

What Happens If You Don’t Replace Your Air Filter?

Most people are aware that they should change their home's air filter on a regular basis, but many don't know why it's so important. A clean air filter helps to remove dust, pollen, and other airborne particles from the air, making it easier to breathe. In addition, a clean air filter can also help to improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system, saving you money on your energy bills.

However, if you don't change your air filter on a regular basis, these particles can build up and cause a number of problems. For example, excessive dust can lead to clogged air ducts, which can reduce the quality of your indoor air and make your HVAC system work harder than necessary. In extreme cases, clogged air filters can even cause your furnace to overheat and break down. Therefore, it's important to change your home's air filter regularly in order to avoid these potential problems.

What Air Filters Does JC Refrigeration Heating and Air Conditioning Carry?

At JC Refrigeration Heating and Air Conditioning we carry many high-end air filters to help remove bacteria, viruses, and more from your home or business's air. The types of filters we carry are:

  • Carbon filter - This type of filter uses activated carbon to trap air pollutants. It can also help eliminate stubborn odors in your home.

  • HEPA Filter - This type of filter is great for people who suffer from allergies. This filter has a stronger chance of catching dust, pollen, and other common allergens. It’s important to check if your HVAC is compatible with this type of filter before you purchase one.

  • UV Filter - UV Filters are what most hospitals use to sterilize their rooms, they are great for neutralizing viruses and other bacteria in your home or business.

How Often Should I Change My Air Filter?

A standard disposable air filter should be changed every sixty days or about two months. There are a couple of other factors to take into account when deciding when to change your filter.

  • What is the season? If it’s winter or summer, you’re more likely to be spending more time indoors escaping problematic weather. With more time spent indoors, the more you’ll want to stay on top of changing your filter.

  • Do you have pets? If you have pets in your household, it’s recommended that you change your air filter every 30 days, especially if your pet sheds a lot. A great way to help keep your home’s air cleaner is to groom your pets outdoors.
